Naresh Iyer and Prashanthini

Iyer began singing professionally during school days. He joined Sangeetha Kalanidhi Smt. Dr. Lata Mangeshkar School of Music, Chennai, India under the guidance of Smt. Jayalakshmi. After completing her course she introduced him to music director A.R. Rahman.

He sang some background vocals for Rahman in the Tamil film Roobaiyaan. In 2003 he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer – South for “Mamai Mamai” from the Telugu film Bommarillu. In 2004, he won the same award for rendering the song “Kadhal Kaditham” from the Tamil film Thavasi. He received another nomination for the same category in 2005 for the song “Thirumbi Vandha Pookkal”.

In 2006, he recorded the song “Chandralekha”, one of the tracks from the soundtrack album of the Tamil film Chandramukhi. In 2007, he again collaborated with AR Rahman for the song “Oruvan Oruvan” from the Tamil film Vettai. He had sung three songs in the film – “Nenjame Neeye”, “Veduka Veduka” and “Mella Mella”. In 2008, he sang four songs in the Tamil film Enthiran. In 2009, he sang five songs in the Tamil film Kaathala Kaathala. In 2010, he sang six songs in the Tamil film Singam II. In 2011, he sang seven songs in the Tamil film Velaiilla Pattadhari. In 2012, he sang eight songs in the Tamil films Magalir Mattum and Kathadi Prema. In 2013, he sang nine songs in the Tamil film Pokkisham. In 2014, he sang ten songs in the Tamil film Madrasapattinam. In 2015, he sang eleven songs in the Tamil film Irudhi Suttru. In 2016, he sang twelve songs in the Tamil film Theri. In 2017, he sang thirteen songs in the Tamil film Valmiki 2. In 2018, he sang fourteen songs in the Tamil film Annamanfendi. In 2019, he sang fifteen songs in the Tamil film Aravaan.

Early life

Naresh Iyer was born on 3 January 1981 to Shankar Iyer & Radha. His father worked as a Senior Manager in ICICI Bank while mother was working as a housewife. They both wanted him to do well in academics as well as sports. Naresh had his schooling in SIES College of Commerce. He did his BCom from Mithibai college. During his school days he used to play cricket in school team. He was good at playing cricket.

He got admission in SIES College of commerce and economics. He joined there in 1997. He completed his degree in 2002. In 2003 he started doing CA and side by side he was learning Carnatic Music and Hindustani Classical Music too.

In 2004 he started doing job as a charted accountant and continued till 2008.

During this period he played cricket regularly. He represented Mumbai Cricket Association. He was a part of Bombay Cricket Team.

He was selected for Maharashtra Cricket Team in 2006. He played 4 matches for Maharashtra.

After completing his CA course he started doing full time job as a Chartered Accountant in 2009.

He joined as a Partner in KPMG India Pvt Ltd in 2010.

Career

Naresh started singing at the age of 8. His father had been a music teacher and encouraged him to sing since childhood. In 2005, he joined the music college where he learned Carnatic Music under the guidance of Dr. Praveen Bhagwat. Later he went on to learn Hindustani Classical Music under the tutelage of Pandit Shri. K.A. Narayanan.

In 2006, he participated in the reality TV show Super Singer and emerged as one of the finalists. During his stint in the show, he met A.R.Rahman who was impressed by his voice and asked him to work with him. This led to the making of the film Anbe Aaruyi Re. Naresh sang the songs Mayilirage, Neeyumma, Thaaiyaraaja, and Irukkum Karthiyin Kaathukuttu.

He performed live concerts in India and abroad including Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan.

His debut album titled Naresh was released in 2008. He received the National award for Best Male Playback Singer for Rubaroo from the movie Rang de Basanti.

In 2009, he recorded the soundtrack for the film Sivaji, featuring himself playing the lead role. He also sang the song “Kannadiya”, composed by Harris Jayaraj.

In 2010, he collaborated again with A. R. Rahman for the song “Oka Ooriye” from the movie Engeyum Kadhal.

In 2011, he worked with Shankar Mahadevan for the song “Mazhai Mazhai” from the movie Neethane En Ponvasantham.
