Hariharan
Hariharan was born on February 3, 1938, in Chennai, India. He is the son of Hindustani music composer, violinist and singer H.A. Subramanyam “Has”, and Alamelu Manickam Ammal, a musician and dance instructor. Has is known for composing over 500 songs in Tamil cinema, including hits like Kannum Karalil, Kaadhal Padutha Sigappu Rojakkal, Thirupathi Ezhumalai, Pudhu Vasantham, En Kadhal Kanmani and Vazhkai Illatha Raathri. His brother, Mysore Anantharaman “Anand”, was also a noted film composer. Hariharan learned Carnatic music from his father and began performing concerts at age five. At age 11, he became a disciple of the great Indian violinist T. N. Krishnan, whom he later credited as having been one of the main influences in shaping his style. In 1953, aged 14, he won the prestigious Madras Music Academy award for best violin performance.
In 1955, Hariharan joined the Trinity College of Music in London under the tutelage of Professor Charles Groves. After completing his studies there, he returned to India and formed his own orchestra, which toured extensively throughout South Asia. During this period, he composed several popular songs, including “Kalladaikku Oruvanthal” (1957), “Thangaveli” (1959), “Nalla Neram” (1960) and “Ondre Kodiveerile” (1963). He also wrote lyrics for some of these songs.
In 1960, Hariharan married actress Sowcar Janaki, with whom he had two sons, Prabhakaran and Vishnuvardhan. The couple divorced in 1969.
Career
Hariharan began his singing career while still studying in school. As a teenager, he joined All India Radio and recorded several songs, including one called “Ishq Nachaya”, which went on to become popular among college students. This led to offers from record companies, including HMV, where he worked for three months. After being dissatisfied with the work environment there, he left and joined the Indian Army.
As part of his army duties, he participated in a talent contest organised by AIR. He won the competition and was offered a contract with EMI Records. However, due to some problems with the management at EMI, he opted out of signing the deal. While working for EMI, he met composer A R Rahman, who had just finished composing the soundtrack for the Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu. They got along very well and soon formed a musical partnership.
In 1978, Hariharan scored a major breakthrough in the Hindi film industry with the song “Ajeeb sa Nehe Mein Gaajiya Yaaron”. The song became a huge success, winning him the Best Male Playback Singer award at the 1979 Filmfare Awards and the Uttar Pradesh State Film Award. Soon afterwards, he signed a recording contract with Sony Music and composed music for several Hindi movies.
He has since gone on to compose music for over 200 feature films. Some of his most memorable songs include “Kaun Banega Crorepati”, “Chalte Chalte”, “Yeh Meri Zohra Hai”, “Mohabbat Ke Dushman”, “O Mere Watan Ke Logo”, “Mera Naam Joker”, “Humko Tumse Milenge”, “Tujhe Dekho”, “Jab Tak Hain Kaho”, “Teri Kasam Se”, “Ek Aur Ek Gyarah”, “Maahi Ve”, “Gori Baliyan”, “Waqt Teri Yehi Kahani”, “Bekaraar Bewafaar”, “Nazarana”, “Zindagi Ka Safar”, “Tu Hi Tu Hi”, “Meherbaan”, “Main Toofaan Ho Gayaa”, “Raaste Raate”, “Saathi”, “Lakshmi Poojanam”, “Jai Jai Shiv Shankar”, “Ram Lakhan”, “Kaisey Deen Jaye”, “Jaane Koee Do”, “Lovely Laila Majnu”, “Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi”, “Shubh Mangal Savadhan”, “Khwaja Khurram”, “Kasme Vaade”, “Khamoshi”, “Taare Zameen Par”, “Aap Ki Khatir”, “Amar Prem”, “Parwana”, “The Legend of Bhagat Singh”, “Karz” and “Paheli”.
Hariharan has been awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour given by the Government of India. He received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2011.
