Rapper Doja Cat recently announced she had signed a deal with Atlantic Records. She shared a video of herself singing her hit single “Say My Name,” along with several others.
The New York native wrote the song while working on her debut album, which is expected to drop later this year.
She has been making music since she was 15, releasing three mixtapes under her real name, including 2016’s “Trap Queen.”
Early life
Amala Ratna Zandil Dlamini was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 21, 1995. Her parents are Dr. Sita Ram Zandili and Dr. Raja Singh Zandili, both doctors. She has one younger sister named Riya. When she was young, she had a pet dog named “Minnie”. She attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, studying philosophy, religion, psychology, and biology. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Religion, Psychology, and Biology. In 2016, she received a master’s degree in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law from Oxford University.
In 2013, she went to India for the first time, spending three months there. She visited several ashrams, including Sai Anantan Ashram, and also spent some time learning Sanskrit. She returned to India again in 2017, spending six weeks in Mumbai, Delhi, and Jaipur. On her return trip, she visited Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Pushkar, Varanasi, Agra, and Mathura. She also met many people and interacted with them. She says that it changed her perspective about how we treat animals.
She believes that the world needs positive change and that everyone deserves respect. She wants to make the world a better place. She feels very strongly about animal rights and environmentalism. She loves nature and wildlife. She enjoys traveling, reading books, listening to music, watching movies, cooking, and playing video games.
Career
Doja Cat grew up listening to hip hop, soul and jazz. She began making music at age 12, writing songs about her experiences growing up in Maryland. Her father introduced her to producers like DJ Khalil and Jahlil Beats, whose work inspired her to start producing herself. At age 14, she dropped out of high school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue music full-time.
In 2013, Doja Cat signed a publishing contract with Warner Chappell Music, and later that same year, she landed a record deal with Atlantic Records. She worked with producer Noah “40” Shebib on her debut album,and it was released in October 2014. The album debuted at number 48 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 8,300 copies in its first week of release.
