Am I throwin’ you off?
Nope
Didn’t think so
How you doin’, young lady?
That feeling that you giving really drives me crazy
You don’t, have a player ’bout to choke
I was at a loss for words first time that we spoke
You’re lookin’ for a girl that’ll treat you right?
How you’re lookin’ for her in the daytime with the light?
You might be the type if I play my cards right
I’ll find out by the end of the night
You expect me to just let you hit it?
But will you still respect me if you get it?
All I can do is try, gimme one chance (Chance)
What’s the problem? I don’t see no ring on your hand (Hand)
I’ll be the first to admit it
I’m curious about you, you seem so innocent
You wanna get in my world, get lost in it?
Boy, I’m tired of runnin’, let’s walk for a minute
Promiscuous girl, wherever you are
I’m all alone, and it’s you that I want
Promiscuous boy, you already know
That I’m all yours, what you waiting for?
Promiscuous girl, you’re teasin’ me
You know what I want, and I got what you need
Promiscuous boy, let’s get to the point
‘Cause we’re on a roll, you ready?
Roses are red, some diamonds are blue
Chivalry is dead, but you’re still kinda cute
Hey, I can’t keep my mind off you
Where you at? Do you mind if I come through?
I’m out of this world, come with me to my planet
Get you on my level, do you think that you can handle it?
They call me Thomas, last name Crown
Recognize game, I’ma lay mines down
I’m a big girl, I can handle myself
But if I get lonely, I’ma need your help
Pay attention to me, I don’t talk for my health
I want you on my team
So does everybody else
Shh, baby, we can keep it on the low (Low)
Let your guard down, ain’t nobody gotta know (Know)
If you with it, girl, I know a place we can go
What kind of girl do you take me for?
Promiscuous girl, wherever you are
I’m all alone, and it’s you that I want
Promiscuous boy, you already know
That I’m all yours, what you waiting for?
Promiscuous girl, you’re teasin’ me
You know what I want, and I got what you need
Promiscuous boy, let’s get to the point
‘Cause we’re on a roll, you ready?
Don’t be mad, don’t get mean
Don’t get mad, don’t be mean
Hey, don’t be mad, don’t get mean
Don’t get mad, don’t be mean
Wait, I don’t mean no harm
I can see you with my T-shirt on
I can see you with nothin’ on
Feelin’ on me before you bring that on
Bring that on?!
You know what I mean
Girl, I’m a freak, you shouldn’t say those things
I’m only trying to get inside of your brain
To see if you can work me the way you say
It’s OK, it’s alright
I got something that you gon’ like
Hey, is that the truth or are you talking trash?
Is your game M.V.P. like Steve Nash?
Promiscuous girl, wherever you are
I’m all alone, and it’s you that I want
Promiscuous boy, I’m callin’ your name
But you’re drivin’ me crazy the way you’re makin’ me wait
Promiscuous girl, you’re teasin’ me
You know what I want, and I got what you need
Promiscuous boy, we’re one and the same
So we don’t gotta play games no more
Nelly Furtado
Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado burst onto the music scene in 2002 with her debut album Whoa, Nelly!, which included the hit single “Promiscuous.” She followed up with 2004’s Folklore, which spawned the singles “Maneater” and “Powerless (Say What You Want).” Her fourth studio album Loose, released in 2010, produced three hits including “All Good Things (Come To An End),” which peaked at number one in Canada and the United States. In 2012 she collaborated with Timbaland on the song “Promiscuous,” which became a worldwide smash. In 2013, Furtado signed with Sony Music Canada and released her fifth studio album Night Ride Home, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Her sixth studio effort, Man, was released in 2016.
Furtado’s seventh studio album, Promiscuous, arrived in 2018. It includes the lead single “I Don’t Wanna Know” featuring rapper 21 Savage.
Early life
Furtado grew up in Vancouver, where she attended Lord Byng Secondary School. She began her music career while still in high school, playing guitar and singing in a band called “The Temptations”. In 1996, she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she joined Canadian pop singer Avril Lavigne’s tour crew. In 2000, she signed a record deal with Atlantic Records, releasing her debut single “I’m With You”, which peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, it did not sell well enough to warrant inclusion on her self-titled album, which was released later in 2001.
In 2002, she released her second studio album, Under My Skin, which included the singles “Live While We’re Young”, “What If I Do”, and “Don’t Tell Me”. The latter song became her biggest hit, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and selling over 5 million copies worldwide. The success of the single allowed Furtado to sign a contract with Universal Music Group, and release her third album, Who Says, in 2004. The lead single, “Say Something”, reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Furtado’s highest-charting single. The album itself debuted atop the Billboard 200, making Furtado the first female artist to have two consecutive albums debut at number 1 since Mariah Carey in 1994.
In 2005, Furtado released her fourth studio album, Folklore, which featured the singles “Maneater” and “Powerful.” Both songs were top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. The following year, Furtado released the EP The Spirit Indestructible, which contained four new tracks as well as remixes from previous singles. In 2007, Furtado released another EP titled The Gift, which included five new songs and a cover version of the song “Love Is A Battlefield” by Bonnie Tyler.
Career
Furtado began performing professionally in Canada at age 15, playing guitar and singing in bars and clubs around Toronto. At the same time, she attended high school and college while working part-time jobs. She studied economics at York University, where she graduated in 1998.
In 1995, Furtado joined Canadian band Plain of Fascination, fronted by fellow Ontario native Tallis Newkirk. They had been friends since childhood, and Newkirk introduced her to his family. While living together in their parents’ basement, the pair formed a musical partnership; Furtado sang and played bass guitar, and Newkirk wrote lyrics and produced music.
After releasing several independent singles, the duo signed a recording contract with EMI Records Canada in 1996. Their debut single, “I Don’t Wanna Dance”, reached number one on the Canadian Singles Chart. The song won a SOCAN Award for Songwriter of the Year and was nominated for Single of the Year.
The following year, the duo recorded a second single, “Crying Over You”, which reached number three on the chart. Both songs were included on their debut album, Join the Rows, released in April 1997. The album peaked at number four on the Canadian Albums Chart. A third single, “Don’t Let Me Down Again”, followed in September 1997. It became the highest-charting hit from the album, reaching number seven on the Canadian charts.
In February 1999, Furtado left the band and moved to Los Angeles, California. She later stated that she did so because she felt her voice had changed due to her heavy smoking habit. Before moving there, she lived in Ottawa, Ontario, where she worked as a waitress at a restaurant called Café des Artistes.
She found work writing jingles for commercials, including a campaign for Coca Cola. She also landed a job as a production assistant for VH1.
During her time in L.A., she continued to write songs. She collaborated with producer Eric Valentine on a handful of tracks, including “You’re Not Alone”, which was co-written with singer/songwriter Mariah Carey. The song was eventually used in the soundtrack of the film The Prince of Tides, starring Nicole Kidman and Greg Kinnear.
