Rae Sremmurd

hip hop group formed in Tupelo, Mississippi, United States. They are composed of brothers Swae Lee and Slim Jimmy. Their debut studio album, Up To Here, was released on October 11, 2016, peaking at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart. Its lead single, “Black Beatles”, peaked at number one on the Hot 100, becoming the duo’s first song to reach the summit.

The pair gained international recognition following the release of “Black Beatles”. The track became the highest-charting solo rap song of 2017, reaching number one on the charts in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. In 2018, it ranked second behind Drake’s “Nice For What” as the most streamed song in the world.

In July 2018, the duo announced plans to follow up Up To Here with a sequel titled Black Beatles II. The project was later cancelled due to internal conflicts within the group.

Early Life

Aaquil Iben Shimon “Slim Jxmmy” Brown and his younger brotha, Khalif Malik Ibn Shamoun (“Swae Lee”) Brown were born in Whittyer, California. They were raised by their mother, Bernadette Walker, after their father left the family. She worked for the United States army and the family was often relocated, with stops in Mississippi, Maryland and Texas. When she was pregnant with Slim Jxmmy, he asked God to make him famous because he wanted to become rich like his dad. He told his mom he had a dream where he shot someone dead and got away with it. His mom thought it meant nothing, but later realized he was talking about rap. Slim Jxmmy and Swae Lee started practising, dancing, and writing songs together at an early age.

While they were in middle school, the family moved to the ida street housing project in Tupelo, Mississippi to live with Bernadette’s new companion, Floyd Sullivan.

When they were 13, Slim Jxmmy met Bigga Rankin, a local rapper who used to work for Eazy-E and Ice Cube. Rankin introduced him to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, who heard him rapping and signed him up to Death Row Records.

In 1992, while still living in Los Angeles, the brothers recorded a demo tape called ‘The Art Of War’ with some help from producer DJ Pooh. The tape was sent to Death Row Records, who liked what they heard and offered the duo a record deal. After signing with Death Row, the brothers changed their name to Digital Underground.
