Who is BTS?
The members of BTS are known for their signature dance moves and synchronized choreography. But what exactly makes them stand out among the rest of the K-Pop pack?
In our latest video, we break down everything you need to know about the seven-piece boyband. From how they got together to why they’re still one of the most popular acts today.
What’s in a name? The meaning behind the acronym
The members of K-pop boy band BTS are known for being extremely careful about what they say and do offstage, and it turns out that even their names are carefully chosen. During an appearance on the Graham N0rton show in 2018, the group revealed that their initials stand for something else entirely. When asked how the band came up with Bangtan Sonyeondan, the acronym for “Beyond the Scene,” the answer was simple: They just liked it.
RM
Kim Namjoon is known as the leader of South Korean boy group BTS. He began his career as a rapper in high school before becoming part of the band BTS. His stage name is RM, short for Rap Monster. He is considered the most popular member of the group.
Jungkook
Jungkook, whose full names is Jeon Jeongguks, is one of Bts’ singers.
He’s also the youngest member in the group, making him Bts’ Golden Maknae
Jungkook was discovered when he audition for the 3rd season of super star k in his hometown of busan.
He was eliminated in the audition rounds but the show gave him the chance to be scouted by 7 different agencies like jyp entertainment, fnc entertainment & starship entertainment.
In the end, he choose big hit entertainment to become a trainee.
Jungkook says that the main reason why he chose bighit entertainment was because of rm who impressed me with his rap skills.
V
Is the Son of Farmers Who Became One of South Korea’s Most Successful Musicians”
Kim Taehyung grew up in rural Daegu, where his parents ran a small farm. His father died when he was young, and his mother struggled to raise four children alone. She worked hard to send her kids to college, and she hoped they’d do well enough to help pay off the family debt. But even though she had dreams for her sons, she never expected them to become famous musicians.
While growing up, V dreamed of being a professional musician. In high school, he played the saxophone, and soon after, he went to auditions for music programs at universities around Daegu. When he finally got accepted into a university, he thought about how he could earn money while studying. So he took a job at a record label, hoping to learn everything he needed to know about making music. Eventually, he joined the group BTS, and now, he plays the lead role in many of their songs.
Suga’s real name is Min Yoongi
The real name of Suga — one of the main rappers in K-pop boy band BTS — is Min Yoongi, according to reports. This revelation comes just days after rumors began circulating online about Suga’s identity.
According to Billboard, Suga’s birth name is actually Min Yoongi. In fact, he even appears on the Korean version of his debut single, “No More Dream,” under his given name. However, fans are still calling him Suga because it sounds like the English pronunciation of his stage name, Bang Si Hyuk.
Min Yoongi is a fairly common Korean surname meaning “younger brother.”
The news follows a recent report claiming that Suga had been dating actress Song Ji Hyo since 2017.
Jin
Kim Seokjin, better known as BTS’ “V,” left the band in 2018.
He was the fourth member of the boyband, joining the group in 2016. His debut single was “Boy With Luv.”
The singer had been in the K-pop scene since 2011, when he joined SM Entertainment.
But, thinking that the offer wasn’t real, he didn’t follow up with the agency.
A few months later, another scout came across him on the streets of his hometown in Anyan, Gyeonggi Province. This time, the scout convinced him to audition for Big Hit Entertainment.
As a drama major at Seoul National University, the singer had no prior musical training.
So, he auditioned to be an acting role.
Jimin
The band BTS formed in 2012 in South Korea. In 2013 they released their debut album “2 Cool 4 Skool”, followed by “2013 MTV World Stage”. They are now one of the most successful Kpop bands in the world.
In 2016 they won many awards including Best International Artist at the Billboard Music Awards. Their song “DNA” reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the best selling single of 2017.
They are known for their unique style, which combines hip hop and electronic music.
J-Hope
Before BTS, J-HOPE, whose full name is Jeon Ho Seok, was best known for being a dancer. In fact, he started dancing in the dance crew Neur0n in his hometown of Gwanganju, South Korea, before he auditioned for the record label JYP Entertainment.
Because of his dance skills and sense of rhythm, Big Hit Entertainment saw J-Hope’s potential was a rapper and decided to sign him as a trainee under the group name 2PM. But while J-Hope was still a trainee, Big Hit Entertainment almost broke up with him because he wasn’t sure whether J-Hope could become a successful singer.
However, J-Hope’ s debut as one of BTS members almost didn’t happen. When RM introduced J-Hope to the rest of the band, he told them how J-Hope had been rejected by many companies and asked them to convince him to join BTS.
J-Hope’s rap style was very different from the others’, especially Jimin’s, so some people thought he wouldn’t fit into the group. But RM convinced everyone that J-Hope was perfect for the role.
Facts about Rap Monster
Rap Monster is the leader of BTS. His nickname is “God of Destruction”. He is known as the youngest member of Big Hit Entertainment. He is the oldest among the members. He is nicknamed “The God of Destruction” because he destroys everything he gets his hands on. He is the first member to join BTS. He is the only member who still lives in Korea. He graduated from Seoul National University majoring in history. He majored in history because of his interest in Korean culture.
He wants to become a doctor and open a clinic specializing in skin care.
Their ‘ARMY’ is strong
The K-pop boy band BTS has been called many things: “the Beatles of Korea,” “Korea’s Taylor Swift,” and even “a global phenomenon” by Billboard. But what do they mean to their fans? They are known as the ARMY—an acronym for Adorable Representative MASSIVE Community—and it’s safe to say that there are few groups out there with such a devoted following.
According to data collected by the Guinness Book of World Records, BTS has the most Twitter engagements among musicians. In 2018 alone, the group generated nearly 2 billion tweets. And while the term “fandom” isn’t exactly used in reference to pop stars, BTS is one of the biggest fandoms around. Fans flock to the band’s concerts, buy merchandise, and even make pilgrimages to South Korea just to see them perform live.
And now, the group has their very own Instagram account. Each member has his or her own profile, including RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook. There are already over 8 million followers on the accounts.
They’ve spoken out about climate change, youth activism and COVID-19 vaccines
South Korea’s K-pop band BTS has spoken in public several times since becoming global superstars. They’ve done it in person — including at the United Nations General Assemblies in New York City three times. And they’ve done it virtually, too — once in 2018 to promote the release of a UNICEF campaign called Generation Unlimited, and again in 2019 during the #MeToo movement.
In September, BTS returned for the third time to the General Assembly, where they spoke about sustainable development goals and confirmed they had been immunized against coronavirus. Invited by South Korean president Moon Jae-in, BTS talked about climate change and how the pandemic could help bring attention to the issue. The band members wore face masks and took part in a live video chat with students across the globe.

In South Korean boy band BTS, you can sometimes find the oldest members of BTS helping out the youngest members. But what happens when the oldest members forget how old they really are?

Jin – 30 years old
Jimin – 26 years old

With most of their birthdays falling in the fall and winter months, the group celebrates several birthdays in the same week. They even have a few members whose birthday falls within one day of each other.
Here are the BTS members’ birthdays, oldest to youngest:

BTS members height:
“From tallest to shortest”
Of course, the topic of height always comes up amongst the members, especially during group photo shoots. Some people joke around about how tall they think the others are, while others try to keep it cool and act like they don’t care. But there’s one thing everyone agrees on: the members are all fairly short compared to westerners.
The average height of a Korean male is 170 centimeters and the average height of a female is 160 centimeters. So you’d probably guess that the members are all pretty close to those numbers. But that’s not true…
Here are the BTS members height from tallest to shortest:
• RM – 181 cm
• Jin – 179 cm
• V – 178 cm
• Jungkook – 178 cm
• J-Hope – 177 cm

• Jimin – 173 cm
History
The story behind BTS begins with Bang Si Hyung, Kim Namjoon, Jung Kook, Jimin, V, and Jinyoung, who met each other through Big Hit Entertainment’s audition program called “Hit It.” In 2010, the five boys were selected out of over 10,000 applicants and became the agency’s trainees. They worked hard during training sessions and practiced singing, rapping, dancing, and learning choreography. After one year of training, they debuted as BTS on June 13, 2013.
Before debuting in 2013, the members began building up their name and establishing a relationship with fans through social media such as Twitter, video blogs, fan cafes, and by uploading cover songs online. These efforts led to their success as global stars.
In 2014, BTS released their first album “2 Cool 4 Skool”, which was followed by another album titled “Wings”. The albums featured hit singles including “Mic Drop,” “No More Dream,” and “Fire.” Their popularity grew rapidly after releasing their third studio album “Euphoria” in 2015.
Since then, BTS has continued to release successful albums and singles. Their latest album, “Map of the Soul: 7”, was released in 2016.
