The Muppets
The Muppet Show premiered on ABC on September 22, 1975, and ran for eight seasons. It was produced by Jim Henson Productions, and starred puppeteer Kermit the Frog and his friends Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Animal, Sam the Eagle, Rowlf the Dog, Beaker, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Janice, and Rizzo the Rat.
In 1980, ABC cancelled the show due to low ratings. However, it continued to air reruns and became popular enough to spawn a feature film, The Muppet Movie, in 1979. In 1981, the Muppets returned to TV with a short-lived spinoff, The Muppet Show Strikes Back, which aired for one season. Then, in 1984, The Muppets began airing again on ABC, where it remained until 1996. After that, the show moved to NBC, where it aired until 2001. From there, it went to CBS, where it stayed until 2003.
After the show left CBS, the Muppets appeared sporadically on network television until 2006, when ABC brought the franchise back with The Muppets, a sitcom starring Ricky Gervais as host Kermit the Frog. This version lasted for three seasons. On April 7, 2009, the Muppets debuted on Fox, where it has been ever since.
Henson died on January 27, 1990, at age 53. He had suffered from complications related to pneumonia and heart disease. His death came just months after he had sold the Muppets to Disney.
1970s: The Muppet Show and foray into film
The original Muppet Show debuted on September 22, 1975, on CBS. During its run, it became one of the highest rated programs in TV history, regularly beating out NBC’s Cheers and ABC’s Happy Days. Despite the success of the program, however, the show was canceled in 1978 due to low ratings.
After being turned down by American broadcast networks, Jim Henson Productions began looking overseas for distribution partners. A deal was struck with ATV, a London production company owned by Lew Grade, who was known for his work producing popular science fiction series like Doctor Who and Star Trek. The agreement called for $1 million per episode, plus 50% of the profits above $3 million.
In addition to the financial incentive, Henson wanted to take advantage of the growing popularity of puppetry in the UK. He had already produced several successful puppet shows there, including The Dark Crystal and Fraggle Rock, and he hoped that audiences would embrace another animated children’s show featuring puppets.
As part of the deal, ATV acquired exclusive worldwide broadcasting rights to produce the series. However, the network did not want to air the show full-time, preferring to use the series as filler programming. Instead, ATV
1980s–1990s: Subsequent projects
Following The Muppet Movie, Henson entered into negotiations with Michael Eisner, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, regarding the purchase of Jim Henson Productions. Eisner was also interested to acquire the company for $150million.
Eisner was also interested in buying out the company for $150m.
However, the deal fell apart due to the death of Jim Henson in 1990.
Nevertheless, Disney initiated a licensing deal with Jim Henson Productions, allowing it to develop Muppets attractions. This included the creation of the Muppet*Vision 3D attraction, which opened at Disneyland Paris in 1992.
In 1994, Disney launched the Muppets Tonight TV show and later the Muppets film franchise.
The Muppet Show returned to US screens in 1996.
2000s: Disney acquisition
Fourteen years ago, Disney bought Jim Henson Productions for $75 million. In doing so, it gained ownership of the iconic Muppet franchise. The deal included the Muppets TV show, movies, and merchandise. This acquisition marked the beginning of what would become one of the most successful franchises in entertainment history.
In the early 2000s, there was talk about Disney buying out NBCUniversal. Instead, they went with the smaller rival.
