Mukesh (born Mukesh Chand Mathur; 7 July 1923 – 27 August 1976), popularly known as Mukesh, was an Indian playback singer who sang over 1000 songs in Hindi cinema. He was one of the most prominent singers of Hindi film music during the 1950s and 1960s. His career began with the 1942 movie Aag Aur Insaan, where he performed the song “Ae dil ko deewana hai”, and went on to sing many hit numbers such as “Tumhein ho tumhara rahenge hum”, “O mera pyar kaunsa”, “Kya hua teraa rehta hai”, “Chura liya jisne waale mehnat se”, “Jab tak shikayat chahiye”, “Nainon ki tarah ke naam pe”, “Rajkumar bhaiyya yeh dard nahi”, “Yeh ghar wapsi ka khilaaf”, “Yeh zindagi ke baad sahi”, “Ek ladki aur ek hi behlaan”, “Ganga maangani”, “Humko piyoonga”, “Do do do do”, “Meri mujra”, “Kaise kiya hai jab tumhare liye”, “Saawan mein dil mila”, “Main usse kuchch nahi raha hoon”, “Haseena zulfon ki phoolon neend lekarke”, “Jaane kahan se aayegi”, “Tujhe mere sapnon mein jaata hoga”, “Mere sapne mein aaya”, “Naach ke chalte hain yaaron ko”, “Aankhon mein koi apna”, “Aapka swargaon mein aaye”, “Aapko sambhal gaye”, “Zinda dil mein aati hai” and “Dil-e-dushman”. In addition to his singing career, he also acted in several films including Dil Ek Mandir (1952) and Khel Khilari (1964). He died at the age of 49 from cancer.
Mukesh is considered by many to be one of the greatest voices ever recorded. He has been called the ‘King of Music’ for his unique voice and style, which included a wide range of vocal styles. The Times of India described him as “the first superstar of Bollywood.” He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972.
Mukesh’s father was a Sanskrit scholar and his mother was a classical dancer. At the age of five, he started learning Hindustani Classical music under Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Later, he learnt Western classical music from Pandit Ravi Shankar. He learned Carnatic music from Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. He had a very good knowledge of all three forms of Indian classical music.
He was married to actress Madhubala in 1949. They have two sons, Rajiv and Rahul.
He was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. His family moved to Bombay when he was four years old. He studied at St. Xavier’s High School, Mumbai. After graduating from college, he joined the Film Institute of India in 1941. He graduated in 1943. During this time, he worked as a radio actor and announcer. He made his debut as a playback singer in 1942 with the movie Aag Aur Insan. He continued working in movies until his death in 1976.
In 1952, he met Lata Mangeshkar while she was performing in a play. She asked him to come to her house after the show. When they met, she told him that she wanted to learn how to sing. He taught her some basic techniques and then introduced her to composer Naushad Ali. He helped her get her first break in the industry.
In 1954, he released his first solo album titled Mukesh Sangeet. It featured six songs sung by himself. This album became a huge success and it sold more than 100,000 copies.
