Elizabeth Warren Just Ate The GOP Alive For Gutting Ethics Office; It Was PERFECT (TWEETS)

It looks as though Republicans want to hold themselves accountable for any ethics violations. They seem to think they will be able to do so on their own without any help from external watchdogs.

Not all Republicans, however, it seems even House Speaker Paul Ryan was against the rules change.

According to CNN:

“House Republicans voted 119-74 Monday night in favor of a proposal that would gut Congress’ outside ethics watchdog and remove its independence.

The proposal would bar the panel from reviewing any violation of criminal law by members of Congress, requiring that it turn over any complaint to the House Ethics Committee or refer the matter to an appropriate federal law enforcement agency. The House Ethics Committee would also have the power to stop an investigation at any point and bars the ethics office from making any public statements about any matters or hiring any communications staff.”

Further:

“The ethics office would no longer be able to accept or investigate any anonymous reports of alleged wrongdoing by members of Congress.”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi struck back with this:

“Republicans claim they want to ‘drain the swamp,’ but the night before the new Congress gets sworn in, the House GOP has eliminated the only independent ethics oversight of their actions. Evidently, ethics are the first casualty of the new Republican Congress. The amendment Republicans approved tonight would functionally destroy this office.”

And Elizabeth Warren summed it all up perfectly on Twitter when she said:

“And now the House GOP is gutting its ethics office in the middle of the night – hours before the new Congress is sworn in.”

“Tell us, GOP: Who, exactly, thinks that the problem with Washington is that we have too many rules requiring the gov to act ethically?”

If you want to understand how ridiculous these Republicans are, Texas Congressman Bill Flores literally said regarding the panel:

“…we don’t even get constitutional rights, constitutional protections. They don’t tell us who accuses us and they leak the data — they are out of control.”

He literally wants control over who tattles on him, so, basically, the GOP seems to want to control what they can get in trouble for.

We need strict ethical guidelines from outside ethics watchdogs to hold everyone accountable. Not just Republicans, but everyone in Congress. Imagine if the tables were turned and it were the Democrats trying to pull this stunt. It would be on the front page of every paper and all Fox News would talk about.

CNN reports:

“Norman Eisen and Richard Painter, of the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a nonprofit watchdog group said the ethics office “has played a critical role in seeing that the congressional ethics process is no longer viewed as merely a means to sweep problems under the rug.”

“If the 115th Congress begins with rules amendments undermining (the ethics office), it is setting itself up to be dogged by scandals and ethics issues for years and is returning the House to dark days when ethics violations were rampant and far too often tolerated,” they said in a Monday night statement.”

It really doesn’t get more obscene that what the GOP is trying to pull over on all of us right now. This will literally usher in corruption with no one to truly hold it accountable. These Republicans who are seeking these changes ought to be ashamed of themselves.
